What is onam
Onam is one of the most famous and cultural festival celebrated every year in kerala.onam is celebrated at the beginning of malayalam month chingam. The 10 days of chingam are atham, chithra, chodi, vishakam, anizham, trikatta, moolam, pooradam, uthradam, thiruvonam.it is believed that king mahabali will come on this day to bless the people with happiness and prosperity.in this festival malayali people worship vamana avatar of lord vishnu.in the 10 days, people decorate homes with flowers and make different special dishes.onam celebration include vallamkali, pulikali, pookalam, onathapan, vadam vali etc.onam is celebrated with joy and enthusiasm.

History of onam
Long long time ago, an asuran named mahabali ruled kerala. He was wise, benevolent and judicious ruler and was beloved to his subjects. Every one is equal and lived in prosperity and justice. It is said that there is perfect equality peace and happiness in his kingdom. But the god grew envious at his acts of benevolence and growing popularity. Lord vishnu transformed himself in to a dwarf called vamana and approached mahabali while he perfoming agna and asked for arms. Vamana asked for a simple gift, the amount of land he could measure in three paces and the king agreed to it. Vishnu in the guise of vamana increased his teacher and with the first, he covered the sky blotting out the stars with the second straddled the netherworld realising that the brahmanas third step will destroy the earth how he will offered his head as a last step. Vishnu know his last step will push mahabali to the netherworld.but before banishing him to the underworld vishnu moved by his integrity and humility granted him a boon since he was attached to his kingdom and his people he was allowed to return once in year from oxile.
